The CDC has expressed concerns that, as of June 25, COVID-19 infections are growing in 44 states. The CDC also noted that the presence of COVID in the sampling of wastewater remains low but has recently increased with the highest rates in the western states.
The CDC also released updated recommendations for vaccination against COVID-19, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), based on input from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. For the COVID-19 vaccine, the CDC recommends everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated 2024-2025 vaccine when they become available later this year. The 2024-2025 vaccine is formulated to protect against currently circulating variants of COVID-19 and will protect people from the potentially serious outcomes of COVID-19 illness this fall and winter. For the flu vaccine, the CDC recommends everyone 6 months of age and older, with rare exceptions, receive an updated 2024-2025 flu vaccine to reduce the risk of influenza and its potentially serious complications this fall and winter. While the CDC recommends flu vaccination as long as influenza viruses are circulating, it added that September and October remain the best times for most people to get vaccinated. For the RSV vaccine, the CDC recommends a single dose of RSV vaccine for everyone ages 75 and older, and at-risk people ages 60 to 74. The CDC added that the best time to get vaccinated is in late summer or early fall, before RSV usually starts to spread in the community.
