Spring weather’s cycle has settled in, with unfortunately raining weather on weekends.   Unlike last weekend’s persistent rain, the upcoming weekend has sporadic showers which hopefully will not impact scheduled community outdoor events. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve has opened its month-long Lupine Fest 2025. More details are shared below.

Town News & Announcements

I thank residents who, despite rain on Saturday, participated in last weekend’s outings, including a very popular Arbor Day handing out free tree seedlings and planting suggestions by Town Arborist Tim Downey and Tree Preservation Committee members.  The rainfall also did not stop dozens of residents from participating in cleaning up Town’s parks and open space, and sidewalks along Western Avenue.

This weekend’s events include Caring for Your Cemetery Day on Saturday, May 3 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm at the Town-owned Guilderland Cemetery on Osborne Road in Guilderland Center.   This special event was rescheduled due to last weekend’s heavy rain.  This weekend’s forecast calls for showers which should not impact the cleaning of gravestones and removing overgrowth.  You can get more information by calling the Parks & Rec Office at (518) 456-3150 or by emailing Parks Foreman Dave Jenkins at jenkinsd@togny.org.

On Saturday, May 3 from 9am to 2pm, the Guilderland Garden Club is holding a garage sale at the Town-owned historic Mynderse-Frederick House located at 451 Main Street (Route 146) in Guilderland Center.   All profits will support the Club’s scholarship fund.

On Thursday, May 15 at 1:30pm at the Guilderland Public Library, the Guilderland Historical Society’s feature speaker is the City of Albany Historian Tony Opalka who will talk about the 150-year history of the Albany Fire Department from early bucket brigades, later volunteer companies, to the professional period that began in 1867 and remains today.  Mr. Opalka is the author of a book The Firehouses of Albany, which combines history, anecdotes, extensive illustration, photographs, maps, and documents for nearly 400 years of firefighting in Albany.

Tee-Time

The Western Turnpike Golf Course is now open for the 2025 season.  You can book a tee-time online, consider a membership, sign up for beginning and advanced lessons, and enjoy an outing at The Hedge Bistro.

A reminder that Parks & Rec has opened registration for its 2025 Summer Program which takes place this year from Monday, June 30 to Friday, August 8, with one-week half-day camps, swimming lessons, and dozens of sports and enrichment camps.  The printed lime-colored 2025 brochures are available at Town Hall and the Park & Rec’s Office, and were delivered by back-pack mail at schools before the Spring break.

Parks & Rec’s Pickleball for Beginners takes place from Monday, June 2 to Friday, June 6 from 9am to 11am at Tawasentha Park.  The course can advance your Pickleball game from beginner to an advanced beginner/intermediate player, and also learn the basic skills and rules of the sport.   Paddles, if needed, and balls will be provided.

Please remember that, in all Town parks and open spaces, dogs must be on a leash at all times.  Your dog may be very friendly, but hikers and park patrons do not know that and the presence of an unleashed dog can be disconcerting.   The exceptions to this rule are the Town’s two dog parks at Nott Road Park and behind EMS Station 1 in Westmere.

Please remember that Highway crews only pick up lawn bags and tied brush and will not vacuum leaves until fall.   Leaf piles should be bagged.

On Wednesdays from 11am to 12:30pm, the Guilderland Public Library is the home for Senior Connects!, where seniors can have a friendly chat on a wide-range of interesting topics.  On next Wednesday, May 7, Town Arborist Tim Downey will talk about the harm caused by invasive tree species, and an overview of possible tree selection.   Other topics include home downsizing, senior resources, hobbies, books, movies, favorite day trips, and local events.   No registration is required for this free event.

The Town is accepting letters of interest and resumes from candidates for Police Officer, Telecommunicator/911 Dispatcher, and Laborer positions in the Highway, Parks and Water Departments.

As you may have read, the Federal government is withdrawing support for many social programs that impact food pantries.  Since 1979, the Guilderland Food Pantry has responded to food insecurity in our community.  In just four years, monthly visits to the Pantry have increased from 60 to 196 visits.  You can help the Pantry by making credit card, Venmo or cash donations, arranging for Amazon food deliveries, or dropping off food donations at the Pantry.  Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the Pantry during regular hours or left in the collection bin located outside the Pantry at 4 Charles Boulevard.  The Pantry is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30am to 11:00am.

On this Sunday May 4 at 2:30pm, the 45th Annual John U. Miller Memorial CROP Hunger Walk, which raises awareness and hopefuuly donations to end world hunger, takes place in Albany.  The event provides 25% of the raised funds to local food pantries.  You can get more details about registering for this event or making an online donation.
